Wasly vs Monarch Money: a plan for the month, or a view of your accounts?

Monarch Money is a good app. If you want every account and transaction pulled in automatically, it does that and Wasly does not. Wasly asks you to type in the amounts you plan around. That is a real trade, so this post is about who it suits and who it doesn't.

Where Monarch is the better choice

If you want to open an app and see what you spent yesterday without having typed any of it, choose Monarch. The same goes if you like sorting real transactions into categories and checking them against a budget. Wasly has no transaction feed.

Where Wasly fits

Wasly is built around the plan, not the transactions. The home screen leads with what is due and whether each goal is on pace. You add the bills you pay every month and one line for the everyday spending you will never itemize, such as coffee, groceries, and gas. Wasly uses those amounts to tell you if the down payment fund is on track or falling behind.

It also covers the home side, on the Household plan and up. Maintenance tasks, renewals, and document expiry dates get reminders ahead of time, and your insurance policy and the washer warranty can live in the same place as the budget. Ask Wasly answers questions from your own records, and it never changes anything until you confirm.

What typing things in costs you

You do the entry. It is fewer lines than a transaction feed, since you record bills and plan amounts rather than every purchase, but it is still your time. If you suspect you will stop doing it after a month, a connected app is the safer choice. If the idea of a plan you control sounds better than a feed you review, Wasly is closer to what you want.

The quickest way to find out is the demo. It is a sample household filled with records, and you can click through the dashboard, goals, and maintenance without signing up.
